Child dies outside Bengal hospital as ambulance drivers haggle over fare

­ A 7­8­ months baby was sick as she had problem in breathing. When she had to be taken from one hospital to another, the baby girl died due to delay in ambulance service. Government has managed the free serving ambulances; which are in stand­by positions in the queue; the child could not be taken to the hospital in time, she died. It was just due to delay in ambulance service; because the ambulance driver wasted the valuable time in haggling over fare though the driver had to serve the patient free of cost. Due to the bargaining of the ambulance fare, the driver of the ambulance denied taking to the next hospital timely; which caused the death of a 7­8 month child. About 8­month girl died in front of the government hospital in West Bengal. In the government hospital, when the patients are delivered or transferred for one hospital to another, there is free ambulance service. Soheni Sultana, 7­8 months’ baby girl, had been taken to the government hospital due to inability to breath. After giving her some initial treatments, the hospital authorities said she had to be shifted to Kolkata’s BC Roy Hospital, as her health condition was deteriorated. The child’s father Mr. Imdadur Hasan could use a free ambulance service for babies less than one year old. Hospital authority provided him the necessary papers for the free ambulance service.
