Athlone Institute of Technology has recently researched several natural oils effects on the common bacteria found within the human mouth. Coconut oil came out on top.
This study was a follow-up to earlier studies that showed milk that has been digested made it harder for Streptococcus mutans to adhere to tooth enamel.
Is enzyme-modified coconut oil the toothpaste of the future.
Scientists have found that when treated with digestive enzymes, coconut oil is successful at preventing the growth of the majority of bacteria in our mouths. This includes the S mutans.
Streptococcus mutans are acid-producing bacteria that play a hand in tooth decay. This bacteria affects 60 – 90% of children and the greater part of adults that are in industrialized countries.
The bacteria fighting properties of coconut oil is old knowledge, but further studies suggest that, when treated with enzymes, the oil may eradicate Candida albicans, a yeast that causes thrush.
Dr. Damien Brady, lead researcher from Athlone Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland, stated “Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection.”
These researchers are also studying the effects of digested products, such as coconut oil, on our overall gut health.
“Our data suggests that products of human digestion show antimicrobial activity. This could have implications for how bacteria colonise the cells lining the digestive tract and for overall gut health,” said Dr. Brady.
