Legislature-parliament has elected chairman of the CPN (UML) KP Oli as Nepal’s 38th prime minister in the two-man race for the post on Sunday.Oli secured votes of 338 parliamentarians out of 587 present in the voting for the election of the PM at the legislature-parliament.Another contender for the post, President of largest party Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala secured 249 votes.UCPN (Maoist), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Nepal), Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Democratic) and about dozen other fringe parties and several independent candidates voted for Oli
The votes he secured include 183 of his own party UML, 83 from UCPN (Maoist), 25 from RPP Nepal and 14 from Madheshi MPRF (D). Likewise, he received 12 from RPP, 5 from CPN-ML, 3 from Rastriya Janamorcha, 2 from Nepal Pariwar Dal, 2 from Rastriya Janamukti Party, one each from Madhesh Samata Party Nepal, Nepa Rastriya Party and CPN-United.Before the House voted, UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ proposed Oli as the new PM while RPP (N) chair and leaders of several other parties supported the proposal. Likewise, senior leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed Koirala as as the new PM while the party’s vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel backed the proposal.64-year old Oli was elected from constituency number 7 of Jhapa in the second election of the Constituent Assembly.
